On Friday, December 29, the recently appointed Indian High Commissioner, Santosh Jha, paid a visit to Sri Lankan Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena at the Temple Trees in Colombo. The meeting featured a comprehensive discussion on economic ties and collaboration between the two nations, with a particular focus on expediting joint projects, as reported by the Prime Minister’s Office.

The deliberations centered on the potential for increased Indian investments in the energy sector, particularly in solar and wind power. Joint initiatives concerning Trincomalee oil storage tanks, ports, railways, and other sectors were also explored.

Expressing gratitude, Prime Minister Gunawardena acknowledged India’s support during the current economic crisis. He specifically appreciated India’s assistance in extending debt restructuring facilities, providing relief materials, food, medicine, and facilitating Sri Lanka’s access to the IMF package to address liquidity challenges.

High Commissioner Jha, reflecting on his prior tenure in Sri Lanka from 2007 to 2010, expressed his privilege at returning to Colombo and emphasized his commitment to further strengthening bilateral friendship and cooperation. He underscored the importance of prompt action to implement the India-Sri Lanka Economic Partnership Vision and the 14-point program agreed upon by the leaders of both countries.

Jha declared, “My mission is to work with the people of Sri Lanka, for the benefit of Sri Lanka, under the guidance of Sri Lankan leadership.” He assured that India would provide expertise to support Sri Lanka’s plans for digital infrastructure development, including the introduction of digital IDs for every citizen and the advancement of IT education.
