New Law Imposes Rs. 200,000 Fine on Employers Who Deny Voting Leave

Recent amendments to the law now impose a fine of Rs. 200,000 on heads of institutions who refuse to grant leave to employees for voting.

In addition to the fine, offenders may face up to one month of imprisonment.

Rohana Hettiarachchi, Executive Director of People’s Action for Free & Fair Elections (PAFFREL), emphasized that it is the duty of heads of institutions to approve leave requests from employees who wish to vote.
