Newly Elected Sri Lankan President Dissanayake Expresses Gratitude to Prime Minister Modi

On Sunday, newly elected Sri Lankan President Anura Dissanayake thanked Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi after the latter congratulated the Marxist leader on his victory in the presidential election.

The 56-year-old Dissanayake’s response followed PM Modi’s message expressing his desire to work closely with the new president to strengthen the multifaceted cooperation between the two nations. In his reply on the social media platform X, Dissanayake pledged to engage in collaborative efforts for the benefit of the region.

‘Thank You, Prime Minister Modi’

“Thank you, Prime Minister Modi, for your kind words and support. I share your commitment to strengthening the ties between our nations. Together, we can work towards enhancing cooperation for the benefit of our peoples and the entire region,” Dissanayake stated.

On Sunday, the Sri Lankan Election Commission declared Dissanayake, leader of the Marxist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna’s (JVP) broader front, National People’s Power (NPP), the winner of the presidential election after an unprecedented second round of vote counting. He defeated his closest rival, Sajith Premadasa, of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB).

‘Congratulations Dissanayake’

Incumbent President Ranil Wickremesinghe was eliminated in the first round, having failed to secure enough votes to make it to the final two candidates. “Congratulations @anuradisanayake on your victory in the Sri Lankan Presidential elections. Sri Lanka holds a special place in India’s Neighbourhood First Policy and Vision SAGAR,” Modi wrote on X. “I look forward to working closely with you to further strengthen our multifaceted cooperation for the benefit of our people and the entire region,” the Indian prime minister added.
