The National People’s Power (NPP) has assured that under a future NPP government, Article 9 of the Constitution, which grants Buddhism the foremost place in Sri Lanka, will remain unchanged.
This assurance was given by NPP MP Vijitha Herath during a meeting organized by the All Ceylon Buddhist Congress (ACBC) to discuss the manifestos of presidential candidates and their commitments to protecting Buddhism, Sinhalese culture, and the country’s sovereignty.
Herath affirmed that an NPP government will safeguard Article 9, while maintaining the unitary character, sovereignty, and national security of the country. He highlighted the significant contribution of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) to these efforts and vowed to continue this commitment.
He also stated that the NPP would only implement the 13th Amendment in its current form, refusing to grant police and land powers to Provincial Councils.
“We believe the 13th Amendment is not the solution to the national issue or provincial development,” he added.
