NPP Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake Vows to Cancel Adani’s Wind Power Project if Elected

National People’s Power (NPP) leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake has pledged to cancel Indian conglomerate Adani’s 450 MW wind power project in Sri Lanka if elected, citing corruption and a deal unfavorable to Sri Lanka.

Dissanayake pointed out that Sri Lanka is purchasing energy from Adani at a rate of $0.0826 per unit, while a local Sri Lankan company supplies energy at just $0.0488 per unit.

“The costs of the Adani project should be lower due to its large scale, but the opposite is happening. This is clearly a corrupt deal, and we will definitely cancel it,” he stated.

In February 2023, the Board of Investment of Sri Lanka approved Adani Green Energy’s $442 million wind power project, with plans to construct plants in Mannar and Pooneryn in Northern Sri Lanka.

However, the project has faced legal challenges and is currently under review by the Supreme Court.

Adani Group, led by Indian billionaire Gautam Adani, is also involved in the development of a $700 million container terminal at Colombo Port, further expanding its footprint in Sri Lanka.
