Over 3,000 Driving Licenses Suspended This Year, Says Department of Motor Traffic

The Department of Motor Traffic (DMT) has announced that more than 3,000 driving licenses have been temporarily suspended so far in 2024. According to the Commissioner General of Motor Traffic, Nishantha Anuruddha Weerasingha, a total of 3,249 licenses have been suspended since January, following court orders issued after trials for various traffic violations.

Professor Mohamed Mahees from the Department of Sociology at the University of Colombo highlighted that reckless driving and poor vehicle conditions are the primary causes of frequent road accidents. He emphasized the importance of ensuring vehicle quality before driving.

Additionally, Professor Mahees noted that deficiencies in the country’s road infrastructure have also contributed to the rise in road accidents.
