The debate over the Online Safety Bill commenced in Parliament on Tuesday, the 23rd, after a vote to determine whether the Bill would be subject to discussion. The result of the vote was 83 in favor and 50 against.
Prior to the commencement of the debate, parliamentary sessions were temporarily postponed for a party leaders meeting, as requested by the Opposition.
The Online Safety Bill has faced widespread criticism from various quarters, including the Bar Association of Sri Lanka, IT experts, global social media companies, and advocates for civil liberties.
