Parliamentary Committee to Investigate Alleged Unruly Behavior of Nine MPs in Three-Day Meeting

The Parliamentary Committee on Ethics and Privileges is set to convene over three consecutive days to address six petitions lodged concerning the reported disorderly conduct of nine parliamentarians. The Committee’s inquiry, mandated with ‘special priority’ by Parliament Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, is scheduled for Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday (27, 28, 29 Nov.).

The matters under examination include the altercation between State Minister Diana Gamage and MP Sujith Sanjaya, MP Chaminda Wijesiri’s alleged threats against the Assistant Secretary General of Parliament, the complaint against State Minister Anuradha Jayaratne, the accusations directed at State Minister Sanath Nishantha by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, the complaints filed against Premadasa, Nishantha, and MP Nalin Bandara, in addition to the grievance filed against Minister Ali Sabry.

The Speaker has directed the Committee to expedite inquiries into these incidents and present a comprehensive report before the finalization of the 2024 Budget.
