The Ministry of Labour and Foreign Employment has issued a gazette notification allowing plantation workers to earn unlimited daily wages based on their productivity.
The notification, signed by the Secretary of the Ministry, R.P.A. Wimalaweera, sets the daily minimum basic wage at 1,350 rupees, with an additional 50 rupees paid for each kilo of tea leaves picked. Rubber plantation workers will also receive this extra payment for each additional kilo of rubber collected.
This allows workers to earn higher wages with no cap, depending on their productivity.

The wage increase takes effect on September 10.
