In a high-level briefing to the Cabinet, President Ranil Wickremesinghe has expressed profound concern over the recent hostilities in Israel and their potential impact on Sri Lankan and Israeli residents in both nations.
President Wickremesinghe, prioritizing the safety of Sri Lankans working in Israel, has issued directives to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to swiftly locate and ensure the well-being of these individuals, according to a statement by the President’s Media Division (PMD).
Furthermore, the President has called for assistance in facilitating the safe return of Israelis, including tourists and employees, from Sri Lanka to Israel. He has urged local law enforcement agencies to provide essential security measures for Israelis within Sri Lanka.
While reiterating Sri Lanka’s enduring support for the two-state solution for Israel and Palestine, President Wickremesinghe has strongly condemned the recent Hamas attack on Israel, which resulted in the tragic loss of numerous civilian lives. He underscored that, regardless of past criticisms of Israel’s actions, such attacks could not be justified.
The President has also called for an immediate cessation of hostilities in line with the African Union proposal. He emphasized the far-reaching consequences of the crisis on global fuel prices, warning that the ongoing conflict could lead to an extended period of high fuel prices, which would adversely affect developing economies, including Sri Lanka.
The PMD statement affirms Sri Lanka’s commitment to regional peace and stability and highlights the government’s deep concern for the safety and well-being of its citizens and foreign residents during the current crisis.
