President Ranil Wickremesinghe Announces Imposition of Special Commodity Levy on Various Goods, Effective December 1, 2023

In his role as the Minister of Finance, President Ranil Wickremesinghe has officially declared the implementation of the Special Commodity Levy on a range of goods, commencing on December 1, 2023.

The presidential directive, conveyed through a dedicated government notification, specifies that the levy will be in force until December 31, 2024. This period is subject to the stipulations outlined in Sub Section (3) of Section of the Special Commodity Levy Act, No.48 of 2007.

The impacted goods encompass a diverse array of everyday items, including butter, dates, yogurt, grapes (both fresh and dried), apples, salmon, herrings, and big onions.

This strategic decision aligns with the government’s overarching plan to address economic challenges and ensure fiscal stability.

President Wickremesinghe underscored the imperative nature of these measures, emphasizing their role in tackling economic concerns and safeguarding the nation’s financial well-being.
