President Ranil Wickremesinghe Calls for Comprehensive Investigation Into Economic Crisis Responsibility, Criticizes Opposition’s Breach of Public Trust

Referring to the recent Supreme Court judgment holding former Presidents Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Mahinda Rajapaksa, former Minister Basil Rajapaksa, and others responsible for the economic crisis, President Ranil Wickremesinghe emphasized the need to scrutinize the involvement of others in the economic debacle and potential breaches of public trust.

President Wickremesinghe remarked, “It is essential to examine whether other individuals, including those in the opposition, played a role in breaching public trust. The duty of the main opposition is to take over the government when the existing government resigns. However, the current leader of the opposition and the main opposition failed to fulfill this responsibility by not forming a new government in 2022. These matters can also be subject to investigation.”

He also pointed out an error in the court case number mentioned in a question submitted by Opposition Leader MP Sajith Premadasa, stating, “The number of cases to which the Opposition Leader referred pertained to a case in Trincomalee said President Wickremesinghe in a lighter vein.

In response, Mr. Premadasa downplayed the significance of the case number error and accused the President of evading the core question.

SLPP MP Gevindu Kumaratunga, who spoke subsequently, criticized the President for treating a question regarding the economic crisis with levity. “The President should not have responded with dirty jokes,” he asserted.
