President Ranil Wickremesinghe Launches 2024 School Meals Program

Under the auspices of President Ranil Wickremesinghe, the 2024 School Meals Program was inaugurated today at Sujatha Girls’ College in Narahenpita. The primary objective of this program is to enhance the well-being of students by providing them with nutritious meals.

The program primarily targets students in the primary sector, spanning from first grade to fifth grade. A substantial main meal will be served to all eligible students between 7:30 AM and 8:00 AM, ensuring they begin their day with adequate nourishment. The meals provided adhere to recommendations provided by nutritionists.

In addition to the central program led by the President, the Ministry of Education has organized inaugural events at the provincial level across the entire island. The program is implemented in 9,134 government schools, covering all primary grade students, including schools with fewer than 100 students.

A substantial budget of 16,600 million rupees has been allocated by the government for this initiative. Furthermore, international organizations such as the World Food Program and the United States Department of Agriculture contribute to supporting this program.
