Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe will run for office later this year as an independent candidate, according to his party’s General Secretary.
Palitha Range Bandara, the General Secretary of the United National Party (UNP), announced to reporters following a meeting with the Election Commission on Wednesday (17th) that he requested the election body to hold the election as soon as possible.
In response to questions suggesting that the UNP wanted to delay the election, Range Bandara emphasized that he requested an immediate election to ensure that the Samagi Jana Balavegaya (SJB) and the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) are defeated swiftly.
He asserted that the SJB and the JVP-led National People’s Power (NPP) pose no threat to Wickremesinghe’s candidacy.
The UNP General Secretary expressed confidence that Ranil Wickremesinghe will emerge victorious with a record number of votes in the upcoming presidential election.
