In his New Year message, President Ranil Wickremesinghe called upon all citizens to conscientiously embrace their duty in steering the nation towards recovery from its existing crisis in the approaching year.
The President conveyed in his New Year address:
“As we embark on the journey into 2024, we are confronted with both challenges and the potential for rejuvenating our beloved nation. While each of us harbors diverse personal aspirations, the realization of these aspirations is inherently linked to the revival of the country from its current state of crisis.
Through the steadfast commitment of our citizens and their resilience throughout the past year, we achieved a foundational success in averting the country from financial distress.
However, to attain economic stability, we must persist in navigating this arduous path – one that may not be adorned with flowers but presents formidable challenges.
The responsibility to contribute to this national resurgence rests upon every Sri Lankan. Recognizing and fulfilling this collective responsibility is crucial for the reconstruction of our nation.
January, named after the Roman God Janus, the God of beginnings and transitions, is symbolized with two faces to observe the past and the future. This serves as a poignant reminder for us to reflect on our shared responsibilities.
Let us, in the spirit of the New Year, commit to fulfilling these responsibilities for the greater good of the country, acknowledging both the past and the future.
Through responsible and dedicated efforts, let us strive to make the New Year a prosperous one.”
