President Ranil Wickremesinghe has affirmed his belief that the presidential term is five years and expressed his support for the Election Commission’s decision to hold the Presidential Election in 2024, according to the President’s Media Division.
An entrepreneur named C.D. Lenaw filed a fundamental rights (FR) petition on July 3, seeking an order to prevent the calling of a Presidential Election until the Supreme Court provides its interpretation on the election date.
The petition requests an interim order to delay the presidential election within the currently scheduled period until the court delivers its interpretation on the date of the next presidential election.
Commenting on the matter, President Wickremesinghe stated that neither he nor his lawyers were consulted or informed about the petition before it was submitted.
