The Inter-Provincial Private Bus Association (IPPBA), the All Island School Van Operators Association (AISVOA), and the All-Island Three-Wheeler Drivers’ Union (AITWDU) have collectively decided to raise taxi fares in January due to the recent imposition of an 18% value-added tax (VAT).
IPPBA Secretary Anjana Priyanjith explained that with the introduction of the new VAT, diesel prices are expected to rise by Rs. 50. Consequently, they propose an increase in the minimum bus fare to Rs. 36, while adjusting the remaining rates proportionally. It’s noteworthy that the current minimum bus fare stands at Rs. 30 as of March 31, 2023.
Meanwhile, AISVOA chairman Malsiri de Silva informed the Daily Mirror that they have not yet reached a decision on the specific charges that need adjustment. Despite acknowledging the financial strain on parents, de Silva emphasized their limited options in the current scenario.
AITWDU president Lalith Dharmasekera highlighted the possibility of petrol prices surging by more than Rs. 50 in January. In such an event, charges for the first kilometre would be adjusted in line with the fuel price. Dharmasekera noted that unlike previous instances where they refrained from revising fares during government-initiated petrol price hikes, this time, adjustments are deemed necessary to align with the anticipated price increases.
