Record 51 Drugs Fail Quality Tests in 2024, Highest in Recent Years

In 2024, a total of 51 drugs have failed quality tests, marking the highest number of quality failures in a year, according to the Medical Supplies Division of the Health Ministry.

Among the drugs that failed quality tests, approximately 27 were manufactured in India, 7 were locally produced, and the remainder came from countries including China, Kenya, Pakistan, Japan, and Bangladesh.

Some of the drugs identified as failing quality tests have been withdrawn, withheld, or discontinued.

The Health Ministry reported a total of 600 quality failure cases since 2017. The highest number of such cases, 96, was recorded in 2019, while 86 drugs failed quality tests in 2022.

The issue of drug quality gained significant attention in 2023 due to reported complications and deaths linked to these failures.
