‘Red’ Alert Issued for Heavy Rainfall in Several Provinces and Districts

The Department of Meteorology has issued a ‘Red’ alert warning for heavy rainfall in several provinces and districts today.

Showers are expected to occur at times in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces, as well as in the Galle, Matara, Kandy, and Nuwara-Eliya districts, according to the department.

The prevailing showery conditions are expected to persist in the southwestern part of the island due to a low-level atmospheric disturbance near Sri Lanka, the Met Department reported.

Very heavy showers of approximately 150 mm are likely in some areas within the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces, and in the Galle, Matara, Kandy, and Nuwara-Eliya districts.

Additionally, fairly strong winds of about 30-40 kmph are anticipated at times over the western slopes of the central hills and in the Northern, North-central, and North-western provinces.

The general public is kindly advised to take adequate precautions to minimize damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
