Rise in Complaints About Personal Data Theft Through Social Media Scams

There has been an increase in complaints regarding the theft of users’ personal data through social media scams that claim to provide free cellular data.

Charuka Damunupola, Senior Information Security Engineer of the Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Readiness Team, urged people to avoid opening or sharing such messages.

He stated that a message circulating on WhatsApp claims to offer free data but is designed to hack sensitive information, including personal biodata.

Damunupola also mentioned reports of financial theft linked to this scam.
