Rise in Online Threats Involving Explicit Content Reported by CERT

The Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Readiness Team (CERT) has reported a significant rise in incidents where explicit content is shared online to intimidate and threaten individuals.

According to Senior Information Security Engineer Charuka Damunupola, over 1,100 cases have been reported this year alone, with most complaints involving threats between individuals in romantic relationships.

Damunupola advises victims to gather and preserve evidence, including:

  • URLs of websites where explicit content has been uploaded.
  • Telephone call records.
  • Text messages and relevant screenshots.

He further emphasized that by lodging a formal complaint with CERT, efforts can be made to remove the content from various websites.

CERT urges the public to act swiftly and responsibly in addressing such incidents to mitigate harm and protect victims.
