The Ministry of Health has revealed that 23% of the urban population in the country suffers from diabetes.
Community medicine specialist Dr. Shanti Gunawardena reported that an additional 30% experience pre-diabetes symptoms. She also noted that the overall percentage of diabetic patients nationwide has risen to 14%.
Dr. Gunawardena further highlighted a serious consequence of the disease, stating that one person in Sri Lanka loses a leg every hour due to diabetes-related complications.
