Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has announced that he was unanimously selected as the Prime Ministerial candidate of the ‘Samagi Jana Sandhanaya’ for the upcoming General Election.
He also made it clear that there would be no collaboration between himself and former President Ranil Wickremesinghe. Earlier today, the United National Party (UNP) confirmed that Wickremesinghe would not contest in the upcoming election, and UNP Deputy Leader Ruwan Wijewardena stated that Wickremesinghe does not plan to enter Parliament via the National List. Instead, Wickremesinghe had invited the Samagi Jana Sandhanaya to join forces for the election.
Premadasa, however, reiterated that no such collaboration would take place. When asked by reporters whether contesting together with Wickremesinghe could have led to an election victory, Premadasa responded, “Looking purely at numbers, you might reach that conclusion. But a deeper political analysis shows otherwise.”
He emphasized that Samagi Jana Sandhanaya is moving forward independently, stating, “Those who are accepted by the public are welcome to join us.” He added, “Today, all electoral organizers of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) and all MPs unanimously proposed that I lead the General Election campaign as the Prime Ministerial candidate.”
