Senior Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Priyantha Weerasooriya has been appointed as the Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, under his constitutional authority, the Presidential Media Division (PMD) confirmed today.
The appointment letter was officially presented to the Acting IGP by the President’s Secretary, Dr. Nandika Kumanayake, during a ceremony at the Presidential Secretariat in Colombo on the 27th.
Before this appointment, Weerasooriya served as the Senior DIG in charge of the North Central Province, a position he held since March 2024.
With 36 years of distinguished service, Weerasooriya has progressed through various ranks in the police force, from Police Constable to Senior DIG, excelling in operational, middle, and strategic management roles. He is notably the first officer in the 158-year history of the police service to rise from the rank of Police Constable to IGP.
A law graduate from the University of Colombo, Weerasooriya also holds a Bachelor of Business Administration in Human Resource Management. He became an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) after being sworn in as a lawyer at the Sri Lanka Law College.
Throughout his career, Weerasooriya has received 10 commendation letters from previous IGPs, recognizing his exceptional contributions to the Police Department. His experience also includes serving as the DIG in charge of Crime and Traffic and as Director of Police Logistics, as well as participating in United Nations peacekeeping missions in East Timor and Haiti.
At the time of his new appointment, Weerasooriya was serving as the Senior DIG for the North Central Province.
