Senior Professor Kapila Seneviratne Appointed Chairman of University Grants Commission

Senior Professor Kapila Seneviratne has been appointed as the new Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC).

Prof. Seneviratne holds a BSc (Special) Degree in Chemistry from the University of Kelaniya, graduating in 1990. He later earned his Ph.D. in Chemistry from Wayne State University, Detroit, USA, and completed postdoctoral studies at the University of British Columbia, Canada, in 1998-1999.

A distinguished scholar, Prof. Seneviratne has been awarded prestigious fellowships, including a Commonwealth Fellowship at the University of Leeds, UK, in 2010, and a Fulbright Fellowship at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, USA, in 2011.

Renowned for his research on the chemistry and nutrition of edible oils, Prof. Seneviratne previously served as Dean of the Faculty of Science from 2014 to 2017. He also chairs the Research Council and the Ethics Review Committee of the University.
