The Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Readiness Team (SLCERT) has issued a warning about a surge in financial fraud attempts where scammers are posing as government agencies.
Senior Engineer Charuka Damunupola stated that these scams involve emails containing fraudulent letters with the letterhead of government institutions. The letters typically instruct recipients to make a payment.
Damunupola reported a significant increase in complaints about these scams in recent days.
SLCERT has recorded nearly 7,900 social media-related complaints in the past five months alone, with financial fraud complaints accounting for a substantial portion, totaling 1,830.
