The Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Readiness Team (SLCERT) has issued a warning to the public about a fraudulent National Election Commission website advertising job opportunities for the 2024 Presidential Election. The fake website, identified as a phishing attempt, was being used for cyber-fraud activities.
SLCERT urged the public to verify information before engaging with such sites and to avoid disclosing personal details. Detected on August 9, the phishing website was hosted on a US-based Google server and was designed to collect personal information from Sri Lankans, using the national emblem and the Election Commission’s name.
Following SLCERT’s alert, Google LLC removed the content on August 12. The Computer Crime Investigation Division (CCID) reported that Google has yet to disclose the identity of those behind the fake website. After the Election Commission’s notification, CCID, SLCERT, and the Election Commission worked together to have the site removed from Google’s domain within three days.
