The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) has decided to nominate Namal Rajapaksa as a Member of Parliament through the party’s National List, announced SLPP General Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam at a press briefing this morning (16).
The SLPP managed to win only 3 seats, including one bonus National List seat, in the 2024 General Election held on November 14. Once the largest party in Parliament from 2020 to 2024, the SLPP received just 350,429 votes—3.14% of the total vote—in this year’s election.
Namal Rajapaksa, who also contested in the 2024 Presidential Election two months ago, secured only 342,781 votes nationwide, representing 2.57% of the total presidential vote.
Meanwhile, Chanaka Sampath, who received 8,447 preferential votes in the Galle District, and former State Minister D.V. Chanaka, who garnered 16,546 preferential votes in the Hambantota District, are the only SLPP candidates to win parliamentary seats in the 10th Parliament.
