SLPP to Field Candidate in Upcoming Presidential Election

The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) has decided to field a candidate in the upcoming Presidential Election. The decision was made during a meeting of the SLPP Politburo at the official residence of the party leader, former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, in Wijerama on Monday (29).

SLPP General Secretary MP Sagara Kariyawasam, speaking to the media after the meeting, confirmed that the party would be fielding a candidate under the symbol of the flower bud. He noted that while various views were expressed during the meeting, the majority were in favor of this decision.

Kariyawasam stated that the SLPP cannot support the current President in the upcoming election, as the party has resolved to put forward its own candidate. He also warned that any SLPP member who contests the election against the party’s decision would face necessary disciplinary action.
