The Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) has detailed its ongoing acquisition plans, with a primary focus on enhancing capabilities in key areas such as maritime patrol and pilot training.
Air Force Commander, Air Marshal Udeni Priyadarshana Rajapaksa, confirmed ongoing negotiations with the US Air Force for the acquisition of two newer model C-130 transport aircraft, intended to replace the existing fleet.
Additionally, the SLAF has recently welcomed two new Chinese Y-12 aircraft dedicated to tourism development into its inventory.
In a significant move to fortify maritime patrol capabilities, the SLAF has secured agreements for two Beechcraft King Air aircraft, one each from the US and Australia. These specific models, the 360ER and 350, are expected to substantially enhance the SLAF’s maritime domain awareness (MDA).
“Understanding future challenges, particularly those in the ocean environment, is crucial,” emphasized Air Marshal Rajapaksa. “Safeguarding the Indian Ocean airspace is vital for our nation’s sustainable development, and these acquisitions align with this objective.”
He further clarified that the SLAF’s objective is not to build a large fighting force but to prioritize capabilities in areas such as land and maritime protection.
Future acquisitions will reflect this focus, including plans for helicopters and training aircraft.
The announcement was made by the Commander of the Air Force while addressing reporters on the occasion of the 73rd anniversary of the Sri Lanka Air Force.
