The United Kingdom government has disclosed that Sri Lanka, along with India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Maldives, is gearing up for elections at various levels in 2024.

Responding to a written inquiry in the UK Parliament regarding elections in South Asian countries, Anne-Marie Trevelyan, Minister of State (Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office), stated that India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, and Maldives are all anticipated to conduct elections at different levels in the upcoming year.

The Minister of State emphasized the UK’s belief in transparent and democratic governance as being in the best interests of all people and crucial for the long-term stability of each nation. Trevelyan highlighted that discussions with South Asian governments, opposition parties, and other stakeholders involve stressing the importance of free and fair elections.

“We advocate for an end to harassment and intimidation of civil society, media, and opposition parties. Ministers and Her Majesty’s Government (HMG) officials visiting the region consistently emphasize that respect for the rule of law and access to justice are indispensable components of open democracies,” she added.
