Sri Lanka participated in the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2024 held from October 24-26 in Apia, Samoa. Themed “One Resilient Common Future: Transforming our Common Wealth,” this year’s CHOGM emphasized resilience and cooperation among the 56 Commonwealth member states, which together represent 2.7 billion people, spanning both advanced economies and developing nations.
Key outcomes of the summit included the adoption of the Leaders’ Statement, the Samoa CHOGM 2024 Communiqué, and the Apia Commonwealth Ocean Declaration. Leaders also selected Hon. Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, as the next Commonwealth Secretary-General.
Sri Lanka’s delegation was led by Ms. Manorie Mallikaratchy, Deputy High Commissioner of Sri Lanka in London, along with Mr. Chatura Perera, Director of Europe & North America at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The delegation actively participated in the Commonwealth Foreign Affairs Ministers Meeting on October 24, where Ms. Mallikaratchy met with Hon. Peseta Noumea Simi, CEO of Samoa’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, delivering a letter from President of Sri Lanka conveying greetings to CHOGM 2024. She also met with The Rt Hon Patricia Scotland KC, Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, to discuss recent developments in Sri Lanka.
Ministry of Foreign Affairs
