The Agrarian Development Department has taken steps to establish Sri Lanka’s first model village for strawberry cultivation, encompassing four villages in Nuwara Eliya.
This initiative was launched under the direction of Agriculture and Plantation Industries Minister Mahinda Amaraweera. The model village aims to cultivate various fruits and vegetables for export.
The strawberry cultivation project involves 50 farmers and includes 42 net houses, with an investment of Rs. 20 million. Strawberry plants imported from Australia will be distributed among the farmers participating in the project. The planting in safe houses has been completed.
Additionally, the government has allocated Rs. 320 million to the Agrarian Development Department for this year.
