Sri Lanka Increases Security in Arugam Bay Amid Potential Threats to Tourists

Sri Lanka Police have implemented special security measures in the Arugam Bay area following reports of potential threats targeting tourists. Approximately 500 police officers, along with Special Task Force (STF) personnel, have been deployed to bolster security in the popular tourist destination.

Police Spokesman DIG Nihal Thalduwa confirmed that intelligence agencies and other security forces are focused on strengthening security in the region. He noted that Arugam Bay and Pottuvil are popular among Israeli tourists due to their renowned surfing spots, and recent intelligence suggests a possible threat targeting them.

Although there have been no reports of threats in Colombo or other parts of the country, the Senior DIG of the province has ordered precautionary measures in Arugam Bay, including roadblocks and periodic vehicle and individual checks.

The U.S. Embassy in Colombo has also issued a security alert, advising U.S. citizens to avoid Arugam Bay due to credible information about a potential attack on tourist locations. The Embassy has restricted its personnel from traveling to the area until further notice.
