Sri Lanka Launches Visa-Free Regime for Select Countries as Tourism Rebuilding Initiative

The Department of Immigration and Emigration has officially announced the implementation of a free visa regime for nationals of China, India, Indonesia, Russia, Thailand, Malaysia, and Japan, effective immediately and extending until March 31, 2024. This initiative, launched as a pilot program, aligns with the approval of the Cabinet of Ministers and aims to revitalize the tourism industry.

In a statement, the department specified that foreign nationals from the mentioned countries holding Diplomatic, Official, Public Affairs, Service, and Ordinary passports are eligible to benefit from this visa-free regime. Additionally, these individuals must apply for Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before arriving in Sri Lanka, with the fee waived until March 31, 2024.

Tourists under this scheme will enjoy a 30-day visa-free period, and a double entry facility is granted within 30 days from the initial arrival in Sri Lanka, according to the statement.

The department emphasized that the free ETA under this program can be applied until March 31, 2024, but the period cannot be extended beyond 30 days. If the free ETA expires after March 31, 2024, tourists may apply for a visa extension, subject to the appropriate fee.

The Controller (Visa) for the Controller General of the Department of Immigration and Emigration clarified that this visa-free regime is specific to the seven nominated countries mentioned. Other countries are expected to adhere to the general rules and regulations applicable to Sri Lanka ETA.
