In an operation off the Kovilan Lighthouse in Karainagar, Jaffna, the Sri Lanka Navy intercepted and seized three Indian trawlers carrying 12 Indian fishermen engaged in illegal fishing within Sri Lankan waters.
The Navy, in its ongoing efforts to curb illicit fishing activities by foreign trawlers, especially those from India, maintains regular patrols and operations to safeguard the livelihoods of local fishermen and protect the marine resources of the country.
Upon detecting Indian poaching trawlers in Sri Lankan waters, the Northern Naval Command swiftly deployed its Fast Attack Craft to disperse the unauthorized vessels engaging in illegal fishing activities.
As a result of the operation, three Indian poaching trawlers were seized, along with the apprehension of 12 Indian fishermen. The captured vessels, along with the arrested individuals, were subsequently brought to the Kankesanthurai harbour. Legal proceedings will follow, with the handover of the fishermen and trawlers to the Mailadi Fisheries Inspector for further necessary actions.
