President Ranil Wickremesinghe, in his role as the Minister of Defence, has received Cabinet approval on January 1 for the proposal to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Sri Lanka Navy and the National Nuclear Security Administration of the United States. The focus of the MoU is the prevention of illegal transportation of nuclear and other radioactive materials.
The draft of the MoU has already obtained clearance from the Attorney General. Furthermore, the Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Regulatory Council, the Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Board, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Department of National Planning have all reviewed and endorsed the draft.
