Sri Lanka Poised to Export Renewable Energy, Affirms President in Parliament

In a parliamentary address on Tuesday (12), President Ranil Wickremesinghe declared that Sri Lanka stands among the select countries with the capacity to export renewable energy. Emphasizing the nation’s vast potential in the renewable energy sector, the President outlined a forward-looking strategy.

“We possess surplus energy that exceeds our domestic requirements. Exploring opportunities for exporting energy, particularly to India through connectivity, is on our agenda. To harness this potential, we are actively pursuing ventures in green hydrogen and green ammonia,” stated President Wickremesinghe.

He highlighted the broader benefits of these initiatives, explaining, “Green hydrogen will play a pivotal role in the shipping industry, contributing to the development of Colombo as a prominent port. Recognizing the significance of staying ahead in this field, we have initiated discussions with Germany, seeking assistance in green technology. Similar conversations have taken place with France to draw insights from their successful establishment of green industries. Furthermore, we are leveraging the expertise of the Australian private sector, given Australia’s aspirations to become a green hydrogen superpower.”

President Wickremesinghe emphasized that Sri Lanka possesses the potential to not only meet its own energy needs but to actively participate in the global energy market.

“While India and China may produce more energy than us, their focus is primarily on local consumption. In contrast, Sri Lanka emerges as one of the few nations capable of exporting renewable energy,” he affirmed.

The President’s statements underscore Sri Lanka’s commitment to harnessing its renewable energy potential and engaging in strategic collaborations with global partners to position itself as a key player in the international renewable energy landscape.
