Sri Lanka has resumed its donation of eye corneas to Pakistan, which had been halted due to the Covid-19 pandemic, an official confirmed.
The latest donation of five corneas was dispatched on a SriLankan Airlines flight to Lahore last night and received by a team of Pakistani army medical personnel. These corneas are intended for surgeries at the army hospital in Rawalpindi, as reported by Sri Lankan High Commissioner Admiral (Retired) Ravindra C. Wijegunaratne, who is also expected to witness the surgeries.
Sri Lanka has donated more than 88,000 eye corneas globally, with over 36,000 of them sent to Pakistan.
“This marks a new chapter and beginning in this noble project to foster people-to-people connections between our two brotherly nations, who have been steadfast friends through challenging times. These eye corneas will be implanted in needy patients by Pakistan Military Eye Surgeons. More than 300 patients are reportedly awaiting eye corneas in hospitals around Lahore,” stated the High Commissioner.
The donation was coordinated by Idris Admani, President of the Pakistan-Sri Lanka Friendship Association.
