Sri Lanka Set to Expedite Central Expressway’s Second Phase Upon Foreign Debt Restructuring Completion

In a significant announcement during the delivery of the 2024 Budget Statement to Parliament on Monday (13), President Ranil Wickremesinghe revealed Sri Lanka’s intent to fast-track the completion of the second phase of the Central Expressway, contingent upon the finalization of the foreign debt restructuring process.

President Wickremesinghe emphasized that the collaborative efforts with China will drive the construction of the section from Kadawatha to Mirigama, marking a crucial advancement in the nation’s infrastructure development.

Furthering the commitment to comprehensive connectivity, the President expressed the government’s aspiration to secure support from Japan for the construction of the segment spanning from Kurunegala to Galagedara.

In a visionary move, President Wickremesinghe also outlined the government’s plan to assess the feasibility of extending the Central Expressway up to Katugastota, signaling a broader strategy to enhance Sri Lanka’s transportation network and boost regional connectivity.
