Sri Lanka Welcomes Canada’s Decision to Maintain LTTE and WTM as Terrorist Entities

The Government of Sri Lanka has expressed its approval of Canada’s decision to retain the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and the World Tamil Movement (WTM) on its list of terrorist entities.

In a statement, Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that Canada’s recent review confirms the ongoing threat posed by the LTTE, citing that the group’s remnants continue to operate an international fundraising and procurement network. The review also highlighted the WTM’s role in facilitating the LTTE’s terrorist activities through fundraising efforts.

Canada first designated the LTTE as a terrorist entity under the Criminal Code on April 6, 2006, and is required to review this listing every five years. The latest review, completed in June 2024, upholds this designation.

This is the third consecutive ban on the LTTE in recent times, following similar extensions in India and the European Union. Additionally, the United Kingdom’s Proscribed Organisations and Appeal Commission (POAC) recently dismissed an application seeking the de-proscription of the LTTE, further reinforcing the international consensus on the threat posed by the organization.
