Sri Lankan Citizen Arrested in Rameswaram for Alleged Criminal Activities and Links to LTTE

On Saturday, 41-year-old Jayaraasa, a Sri Lankan citizen, was apprehended by the Mandapam police in Rameswaram. A special patrol team, led by Sub-Inspector of Police Mohamed Tariq Ameen, discovered him walking along the Dhanushkodi-Arichalmunai beach around 7 a.m. During questioning, it was revealed that he had fled Sri Lanka to evade arrest for his involvement in criminal activities.

Sources suggest that Jayaraasa arrived in Dhanushkodi by boat in the early hours of Saturday. There are circulating rumors that he is a sympathizer of the banned outfit Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and had concerns about being arrested by the Sri Lankan police.

A reliable source from Chennai disclosed that a joint team of officers from Central and State agencies is investigating the accused’s background. The confirmation of his alleged links to the LTTE is pending verification by Sri Lankan authorities, according to the source.

The Mandapam police have filed a case under 14 (c) of the Foreigners Act 1946 r/w 3 (a) 6 (a) of the Passport (Entry into India) Act, among other charges. The accused is scheduled to appear before a Judicial Magistrate in Rameswaram and subsequently be transferred to Puzhal Central Prison in Chennai. Ongoing interrogations aim to gather further information. Source: The Hindu
