Sri Lankan Fishermen Rescued After Capture by Armed Group in Seychelles

Six Sri Lankan fishermen, reportedly captured and detained by an armed group, have been successfully rescued, as confirmed by the Sri Lanka Navy to News 1st. The fishermen were aboard the vessel named ‘Lorenzo Putha 4’ when the incident occurred.

According to the Navy Spokesperson, the rescued fishermen are currently being escorted to the capital of Seychelles. The Security Forces of Seychelles conducted the rescue operation, prompted by the intervention of the Sri Lanka Navy.

In a significant development, three members of the armed group voluntarily surrendered to the Seychelles Security Forces, as disclosed by the Sri Lanka Navy.

The ‘Lorenzo Putha 4’ embarked on its maiden voyage from the Dikowita Fisheries Harbour on January 12th. The crew, consisting of six fishermen from Marawila and Chilaw, included three individuals from the same family.

This successful rescue operation marks a positive turn of events, ensuring the safety and well-being of the Sri Lankan fishermen who had faced capture by an armed group during their sea journey in Seychelles.
