The Sri Lankan Navy has arrested 11 Indian fishermen from Tamil Nadu for alleged maritime violations, and Chief Minister MK Stalin has appealed to the Centre for immediate action to secure their release.
A boat belonging to the fishermen was also seized.
In a letter to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Stalin expressed grave concern over the frequent apprehension of Tamil Nadu fishermen. The fishermen were detained while fishing southeast of Kodiakarai in the Nagapattinam district.
Stalin highlighted that such incidents are occurring with alarming regularity. In 2024 alone, 324 fishermen and 44 boats have been apprehended by the Sri Lankan Navy. The recurrent arrests are causing severe hardships for Tamil Nadu’s fishing community, impacting their livelihood.
Additionally, Stalin reported recent attacks on fishermen at sea by unidentified individuals from Sri Lanka, urging immediate attention to these issues.
He has called for urgent and concrete diplomatic efforts to secure the prompt release of the fishermen and their boats.
