Sri Lanka’s external debt reached USD 37.5 billion as of June 2024, according to the Mid-Year Fiscal Position Report from the Finance Ministry. Debt servicing payments from January 1 to June 30 totaled USD 503 million, comprising USD 275.1 million for principal repayments and USD 227.9 million for interest.
Under the interim debt standstill policy adopted by the government on April 12, 2022, repayments on affected loans from bilateral and commercial creditors have been temporarily suspended. As of June 2024, this standstill has led to an accumulation of USD 5.67 billion in unpaid principal and USD 2.527 billion in unpaid interest.
