Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister Meets EU Chief Observer for 2024 Election Mission

Sri Lanka’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ali Sabry, met with Nacho Sánchez Amor, Member of the European Parliament and Chief Observer of the EU Election Observation Mission to Sri Lanka 2024, at the Foreign Ministry on the afternoon of August 26.

During the meeting, Minister Sabry affirmed the Sri Lankan government’s commitment to supporting the European Union Election Observation Mission (EOM) to ensure its independence and transparency throughout the election period.

Responding to an invitation from the Election Commission of Sri Lanka, the European Union has decided to deploy an Election Observation Mission to observe the Presidential Election scheduled for September 21, 2024. The EU, which has a history of monitoring electoral processes in Sri Lanka, has deployed EOMs on six previous occasions, with the most recent mission occurring in 2019. This ongoing involvement reflects the EU’s dedication to and partnership with Sri Lanka.

Josep Borrell, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission, appointed Nacho Sánchez Amor as Chief Observer for the upcoming mission.
