Retired SSP Shani Abeysekara has sent a letter of demand for one billion rupees to four senior police officers, including the current IGP and a Senior DIG, with regard to his wrongful arrest and prosecution.
The letter by attorney-at-law Manjula Balasooriya has been addressed to IGP C.D. Wickramaratne, SDIG Deshabandu Tennakoon, IP Jagath Nishantha and ASP Neville Silva.
The Attorney General has also been cited, as representing the Republic of Sri Lanka.
The letter alleges that the respondents victimized then-SSP Abeysekara and abused the court process.
SSP Abeysekara investigated a large number of high profile crimes during the Yahapalana Government.
With the change in government in 2019, he was abruptly transferred to a lesser post in Galle and subsequently arrested on the charge of falsifying evidence in a murder case.
He was released on bail in a strongly worded decision of the Court of Appeal and the Attorney General subsequently withdrew the charges.(News 1st)
