State Minister of Finance Announces Upcoming Removal of Vehicle Import Restrictions

State Minister of Finance Shehan Semasinghe has announced that the plan to remove vehicle import restrictions will be officially revealed next month.

He stated that permission for importing vehicles necessary for public transport services and commercial purposes will be granted before the end of this year.

Minister Semasinghe also mentioned that plans are underway to allow the importation of personal vehicles by the first quarter of 2025.

He assured that vehicle import permissions will be granted without impacting the Central Bank’s foreign reserves.

The Minister emphasized that lifting the vehicle import restrictions in a way that negatively affects foreign reserves could impact the importation of essential goods.

He confirmed that the restrictions will be lifted strategically to avoid such adverse effects.
