State Minister of Finance Shehan Semasinghe Announces Plans to Ease Vehicle Import Restrictions by Next Year

State Minister of Finance, Shehan Semasinghe, has disclosed that the government intends to gradually ease restrictions on vehicle imports, with plans to permit personal vehicle imports by next year.

Addressing the media in the Anuradhapura area, Semasinghe clarified that the current policy only allows vehicle imports for commercial purposes and does not favor a specific group of individuals.

“The government has not granted permission for a select group to import vehicles. Thus far, only those engaged in commercial activities, contributing to the economy, have been permitted to import vehicles,” stated the State Minister.

He further elaborated that while restrictions currently apply to imports for personal use, the government intends to relax these regulations in the future, with plans for implementation by next year. However, Semasinghe emphasized the need for a cautious and controlled approach to this relaxation.

In addition, Semasinghe underscored the importance of adhering to the existing economic program as the primary means to revive the country’s economy, highlighting its indispensability for national recovery.
