Successful Rescue of Sri Lankan Fishermen Coordinated by MRCC Colombo and Chennai

The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) Colombo, based at Navy Headquarters, in partnership with MRCC Chennai, successfully coordinated the rescue of four fishermen from a distressed Sri Lankan fishing trawler.

The fishermen, who were stranded approximately 447 nautical miles off the coast of Point Pedro, were rescued by an Indian fishing trawler directed by MRCC Chennai, according to the Sri Lanka Navy.

The fishing trawler, which departed from Point Pedro Fisheries Harbour on July 7, 2024, with four fishermen, encountered distress during its voyage. The Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources alerted MRCC Colombo at Navy Headquarters, prompting a call for assistance from MRCC Chennai.

Following the successful rescue, the fishermen were transferred to an Indian Coast Guard ship. MRCC Chennai informed its Colombo counterpart that the rescued fishermen were being transported to Chennai by the Indian Coast Guard on Wednesday, the 21st.
